I'm not too sure who decided this was a hobbyist list.

No one did, did they?

I expressed it's a hobbyist list. For the most part people seem to post because they enjoy talking about the issues.

Especially when those being asked seem to be supporting income generating
ventures

I think that's the nature of technical lists around the world.

I also think there's a fine line... Let's consider the questions I asked about streaming video.

CASE: Last week my Dad give me a call because he's got another 'money making idea' which he thinks I'd benefit from. Following some investigation and consideration, I think that it's just not going to be a happening thing for either of us to make any money from, which is about what I suspected in the first place.

However here's what's come out of the exercise so far...

1. I've made a quick movie that explains the CIA project and have been inspired to get it on line.

2. Nick has been inspired to learn a bit more about streaming video.

3. There is a bunch of posts about the half dozen software products avalible, on this list.

4. Joanna and I spent over an hour with a group of kids at our local primary school this afternoon. As a result of the CLUG effort, we're going to publish some interesting video that they're going to be making.

Now perhaps there are others on list (perhaps Nick as he was the main contributor) who followed a long and have got the resources to make something of streaming video and will benefit from it in terms of a few dollars. Hey, if they do it with Linux then that's all good with me.

First up see: http://clug.net.nz/index.php/ThereIsNoCLUG

How can you speak to the issue of finances for something that doesn't exist?

Secondly see: http://clug.net.nz/index.php/ClugAccounts

CLUG has $628.51 dollars in its accounts.

That balance hasn't dropped below $600 in the last 3 years.

What is it that you think CLUG needs money for?

For that matter, what benefit to the CLUG community is that $600 delivering? Is it getting more users, members or usage?

Is that money benefiting a bank? Is CLUG earning any interest on it?

At present I'm in the process of working out ways to raise funds for the CRRA [1] because we have a range of community projects that need real dollars.

The CRRA is a registered association. In addition to monthly meetings we deliver tangible outcomes for which real money is required.

If CLUG were to associate and step up with some activities that we would like to see delivered then I'd be first in line to help.
