Please tell me which kernel module depends on /boot/grub/menu.lst? None of the modules even contain the string menu.lst. You said something like the last output on screen was "...". That string is printed by one of the init scripts. Not many of the scripts around that one print much if anything, so the hang quite likely was in one of the later scripts. I'd like to know where out of interest, as it might point to the cause of the problem rather than the symptom, but you're not forthcoming with information. You could be more constructive.
