Hi, I'm a newbie to the CLUG and enjoying this thread...
very thought-provoking.

I use Kubuntu on my iBook, desktop and recently installed
Ubuntu Server on another PC (how thematic!) ditching Mac OS
X and Windows XP for good. I ditched Adept and use Synaptic
because Synaptic is much more powerful.

It is interesting reading your posts.

Linux is not ready for users with Winmodems. Sure there are
drivers online, but how the **j* are you supposed to get
them without an internet connection? Sure it's possible if
you maintain dual boot with Windows for the first Linux
install... but doesn't that defeat the point of buying a
machine with Linux only?

I learnt lessons after a few years of tinkering and bought
an external modem from Trademe when I made the decision to
switch to Linux last year. (It's a great excuse not to take
work home... I do .Net/VB6!) However, I look at very basic
users and they're going to be overwhelmed by Linux.
[N]ubuntu is a great leap forward but still those on dialup
are left behind. My mother is a perfect example... she
refers to a "log in" as a "screen" and the computer itself
as the "hard drive". When I had to put together a
replacement PC for her, I set up a single-desktop Kubuntu
installation with a links on the desktop to KPPP, Firefox
and Thunderbird renamed to "Internet", "Web" and "E-mail"
respectively.

You want simple users? I picked up a PC last week that the
users threw out because the mouse wasn't working. I cleaned
the mouseball... hey presto the machine's working like a
dream.
