Indeed. While not strictly related to Ubuntu.....
Does the general public really have any idea of the impact Linux has had
on the IT industry in general? How many startups are using Linux as the
base operating system for their appliances for example? In my
experience, lots.
Linux (IMHO) paved the way for something of a revolution, my first
notice of this was the Watchguard Fireboxes. It was funding from
Watchguard that supported the development of IPTables (love it or hate
it). I think Watchguard got a good deal, I believe as did the developer,
as did the community.
But imagine, how many less appliances and so on would there be in the
world if it weren't for Linux? Perhaps a better way to answer the
question these days is by asking which company isn't using Linux,
somewhere, for something.
