If you can get hold of a Dick Smiths USB-serial converter
(Uses the OHCI chipset, from memory), that'll give you a
virtual USB modem. 

I have found this combination to work a treat -
plug-and-play under Ubuntu. A lazy man's solution to
"sharing" the internet connection between two PCs that
operate in a NAND state.
