The two last models from D-Link and Dynalink should both work well.
My gripe with them is that they don't support fax class 2.0, and class
1.0 has a few problems and isn't as easy to use.

Watch out: because USB speeds are so huge compared with old serial
speeds, hardware makers are making castrated c**p again where they stick
the electronics from an internal losemodem PCI card into a box on the
end of a serial cable.

Those USB-serial converters use chips from FTDI, they work well although
they may only be USB 1.1 (which would be plenty for a modem). The DSE
XH8290 works well with Linux, but at $40 it's twice the price of an
external modem from trademe.

You are the only one I know of who has such a card. I have yet to see
one with my own eyes - I won't let go when I do. As they were more
expensive than a losemodem without another advantage to the Redmond user
I'd say there are only a few in the country and they weren't selling
well. Rumbling through the Supashed might turn out lucky, but >98% of
them will be the useless ones.

Betcha they were "hardware assisted" (HAM) modems. They do most of their
processing on the card, but still only work with an obnoxious
proprietary driver. Be aware that shop assistants couldn't tell the
difference or understand what you mean.

Check GlobalPC item MM10503 very carefully, chances are minute it's what
we want. There seem to be several vendors with that name too. Ok I rang:
it has an Agere SV92PL chip on it. That's a softmodem one.

Sounds like an Intel 536 chip. Hardware-assisted. Intel does not have a
high commitment to keeping this driver available, and it has had a few
problems and hasn't been available for all kernel versions.
