OK, I've got it to boot. mobo was on the latest version BIOS. Here's what it'll 
do.

With a 64 bit system, it'll boot with 3GB memory, not 4
With a 32 bit system, it'll boot with 4GB.

( and with 1 x 2GB and 2 x 1GB dimms installed the OS reports 5GB! )
I expect there's some bios problem with using memory in the > 32 bit range. I 
can't try with 4 x 1GB as I haven't got any.

Docs state the motherboard can run with up to 8GB, so I'm not too sure what is 
going on...
