Good assumption. As that battery is only used to hold the time in the CMOS clock while the computer is powered off, don't waste any time on that battery to solve your (probably) kernel time keeping problem. If your NTP is configured as it should be, the time will be fetched during boot, so the time in your CMOS is irrelevant at that point.
