I didn't think the original suggestion was that good. Make sure the user to be renamed is not logged in. Use mv /home/olduser /home/newuser. Edit /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, dito /etc/group and /etc/grpconv (latter if your system has it). If you can't guarantee that noone else will be changing their password(s) while you're editing those files, and you don't like vi, use userdel and useradd (dito for group). Delete the newly created directory in home and replace with the previously renamed one. Take care of the actual uid and gid numbers, you may have to run chown -Rh on /home/newuser.
