Anything that works is good. Intel and 3com cards are rated up there and
tend to perform better than the cheaper NICs.

Be aware that a PCI bus isn't going to perform at 10x the speed of 100
Mbit. Here's some examples

GigE PCI card to GigE on-board PCI card
mythbox.criggie.dyndns.org 239.000Mbps 0.025

GigE PCI card to GigE PCI card
sucrose.criggie.dyndns.org 196.103Mbps 0.029

GigE PCI card to 100 Mbit PCI card
fw.criggie.dyndns.org 75.350Mbps 0.235

GigE PCI card to 100 Mbit PCI card through two switches
thionite.criggie.dyndns.org 71.144Mbps 0.063

GigE PCI card to 100 Mbit Access Point through two switches
ap0.criggie.dyndns.org 52.927Mbps 0.145

All readings topped out at around 72 Mbit.

If you want to GO FAST then you're needing something better than PCI

lspci shows this
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721
Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 21)
jdj 312.163Mbps 0.069
png 424.889Mbps 0.082

Even then, its not "gigabits"
