Just looking at that particular error report, it looks like some part of the install is failing. In particular the kernel module does not seem to be getting updated at the same time as the rest of the nvidia install. There is a mismatch. Are you running the standard ubuntu kernel or have you changed it? PS why are you using startx? -- Nick Rout
