Other possibly relevant info - on attempting to run startx I have got:
Error: API mismatch: this NVIDIA driver component has version 100.14.19,
but the NVIDIA kernel module's version does not match. Please make sure
all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.

Just looking at that particular error report, it looks like some part of
the install is failing. In particular the kernel module does not seem to
be getting updated at the same time as the rest of the nvidia install.
There is a mismatch.

Are you running the standard ubuntu kernel or have you changed it?
Standard...
PS why are you using startx?
Because after installing the nvidia driver, following the instabilities of the Gutsy-provided nv driver, the machine no longer boots to the graphical login screen, I need to do a text based log in, reinstall the nvidia driver (and subsequently just start it then cancel) then run startx. I have now followed the suggestion to use Envy. It installed easily, first time it ran it complained about a dependency, fixed itself up, then downloaded or changed 85 packages to install the nvidia driver. This included removing and reinstalling nvidia-glx-new and several other nvidia related packages. I was impressed with how easy this was.

As I did this last thing yesterday and was then in a hurry to leave, I will report the success or otherwise when I am back at that computer on Monday.

Cheers,
Roger
