It works with aspell--I thought that aspell was just an easy to use
wrapper for ispell, but when I found out that it is in fact a more
sophisticated replacement for ispell, I changed emacs' spell checking
program to that. And it does flag color as a spelling error, so now
it's doing what I want.

perhaps but please try and see if you can get it to work with ISPELL
as the program that you use.
