Is there anything I should steer clear of?

HP.

Wifi:

I got an HP Pavilion DV1000 and had endless issues sorting out the wifi.

I ended up using ndiswrapper, which is ok (despite what others say) but
it's a pain. Every time I go to install another distro I have to work
out where the wifi drivers are. Ok, so that's not really that hard, but
I just forget between each time.

Sleep Mode:

My HP is known to have problems going to sleep under linux when you
close the lid. While I could find talk about the problem I haven't
found the solution. I confess I gave up when it got to hard and didn't
try contacting the maintainers for the power code. I don't really
understand how all the power stuff hangs together with things like the
display.

I'd like a laptop that has hardware that linux just knows or isn't to
hard to download drivers for and install.

Now having said all this... I know that Nick has a very nice little HP
that he's really happy with.

HTH

Cheers Don
