Yes it's a rip-off which they can get away with because the end user
is not usually the funder of the purchase.

I make use of the fairly large range of readings from ISIS Audio
Books, and classic radio programs, on CD  which are available form the
Christchurch Public Library.

Also you may care to know that DSE have Digitor DVD/CD players which
will play MP3s, as well as ordinary DVDs as well as many other formats
on a cd for only about $50. I saw one there only on Sunday. IIRC, it's
just: Press turn on button; put MP3, or ordinary, CD in tray; press
play button; listen.

I'm not going into the ins and outs of ripping except that I believe
that 'format conversion' is not illegal in NZ.
