Well...

Replying to myself again, but if anyone is searching this thread in the
archives will find my self-torment. :-).

So I backed up my home directories and a package list and installed
Hardy Heron.

Al the important bits work fine, printing, firefox bookmarks, open
office, network mappings (to NFS server)...

I was surprised that evolution 2.4 didn't just suck up my 2.2 stuff, but
with a bit of fiddling I got the contacts & calendar imported OK..

The last item on my list of 'I want working' before I back it up and
start installing media stuff etc was syncing to my tungsten PDA. It's
an old lump of junk, but it gives me mobile email, and huge battery live
compared to a lot of modern stuff....

Wouldn't you know it, there's a kernel bug in 2.6.24 that stops it
working?

As per:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/222052

Anyway, I'm upgrading to the 8.10 kernel which has it fixed according to
that bug, so we'll see...

Oh, and it fixed all my associations, which was the original problem.

Cheers, Me.
