Last reply to myself on this one, promise...

The bug note for Ubuntu below mentioned a kernel package that I could
not find, so I wound up rolling my own from the 2.6.25.4 source from
kernel.org.

It fixed the problem with my USB palm device, although the first build I
did didn't have my sound card module, so I had to do it twice.

What was really interesting is that it takes _forever_ to compile a
2.6.X kernel, this was the first time I've done one.  After 30 minutes
watching it and doing some other stuff I walked away to do something
else.  Must have taken about an hour or so. (On a dual core P4 3.06) Is
that normal for the 2.6.x kernels?
