With respect to wireless support I wouldn't have expected pfsense to be any different/better/worse than ipcop. In general, I'd expect *BSD to have worse hardware support than Linux. You can downlaod fpsense at pfsense.org - 1.2 is still the latest stable. You could try a development version and see if it is any better than 1.2 with your wireless problem, afterall it takes about 5min to install. Backup your current config first - superb feature btw, save one file, which when restored gives you everything back you have put any effort into.
