Thanks guys for all the replies, It turned out that there was a VPN client installed on the VM that was doing it. I am very happy to say that it was nothing to do with my Linux VM installation.
FTR I am running VMPlayer 2.0.4 because the server was not able to run the image that I had and the server that could run it is still in beta apparently.
