Still not working properly. I'm logged in via ssh ( so I don't think it's a 
suspend probloem?? ), but can get no life out of the screen without performing 
a /etc/init.d/gdm restart

This is driving me up the wall! I've removed the screensaver software 
desperation to no avail! 

Any other ideas? It's running nvidia proprietarty drivers if that's any help.
