Uhhh... sorry about not waiting to put this in my last post: I think I found the package that I need to remove to get rid of this: network-manager (and the gnome interface).

Just remember this if your system is changing your ethernet card configuration on its own.

Ok, I have eliminated Firestarter as the cause of the problem.
How can I be so sure?
Because I uninstalled Firestarter, STILL had the problem, REINSTALLED the OS, and STILL HAD THE ******* PROBLEM!!! I have since figured out what I changed that caused it: you know that little netmanager applet (in GNOME)? well I changed my configuration so that it didn't start when I logged in, and when I changed it back, I stopped having the problem. So it would seem that that little applet does more than just connect to a network. Can I get rid of it? (or just turn off COMPLETELY whatever it changes?) I'm using Debian Etch, by the way.

Thanks,
Aidan
