I too have found issues with netmanager.

I generally use it in roaming mode on my laptop and it is wonderful
for 90% of what I do. At work I connect to a docking station and it
connects nicely for me.  At home I start up and it connects to my
wireless network.

The only issue is when I use openvpn at home to access work.  After a
couple of minutes I cannot refer to work machines by name, I have to
use their ip addresses - but it won't use the home internet gateway it
still tries to use the work gateway through openvpn (which is blocked
of course).
