Well in my eyes, Tobias is $deity. Having used nude MRTG for at least 10 years, 
I'm now using one of the packaged versions - munin ( 
http://munin.projects.linpro.no/ ). It's a bit easier to set up, and the 
creation of non-standard plugins is simpler, although that's probably not 
relevant if you're using it for it's originally intended purpose. Another one 
worth looking at it cacti ( http://www.cacti.net/ ). I'm sure there's more out 
there as well.

CPU utilisation of munin seems to be a bit high, but that might just be me. I 
think the answer to your question is going to be in the way that the 
information is presented, and that MRTG in some form or other is the answer. 
Have a ( legal! ) play (:
