Just a quick addendum.

It works perfectly _provided_ you have display compositing turned off.
I.E. no compiz. There is an option in Kubuntu-8.10 to do this: System
Settings -> Desktop -> Enable Desktop Effects. Make sure the button is
off to turn off compiz. Once I did that everything worked perfectly.
