You are correct, but a program that automatically handles it is good.
Mark some ledgers as being GST inclusive by default (eg stationery
purchases) and some by default as not including GST (eg interest, loan
repayments etc). I used a windows cashbook in business that did this
very well.

Moneydance seems to have good reviews by everyone who has used it.
