It has no effect on the transfer speed. Assuming it's a 2.5" laptop drive powered by the host, some USB ports can't provide enough power for the drive. On some hosts using two USB ports may give you enough power. hads -- http://nicegear.co.nz New Zealand's Open Source Hardware Supplier
