Ahh, thanks all for the replies, that makes sense.
I've got a desktop that does not put out enough power on the front USB ports to run a 2.5" hard drive with one USB port connected. However the same drive works perfectly on my laptop with only one port plugged. Even if laptop is running off its own battery.
