Is the wireless working at all? wicd will list available networks and

+1 for wicd. I replaced the wireless on my Acer One with it ( ubuntu
karmic ), and I can now connect with reliability, and see new wireless
networks. However, if the wireless stack isn't working properly, all
bets are off no matter which management package you use.
Mind you, I only use WEP as a matter of principle... the assumption
being that you *are* going to get hacked, so allow a piddly bit of
internet bandwidth for those that succeed, and firewall off the rest.
So far my netbook has only connected to my own networks and a motel in
Kaikoura where they used an open network and payment gateway setup, so
please don't take this as gospel.

Steve
Another conditional +1 for wicd which will deal with connecting to WPA2
networks with encryption - though at first seemed to not.
NetworkManager was hopeless here. I can't get it to connect to one with
a hidden SSID automatically, needing to manually tell it to find a
hidden network on each reboot, it seems not to be capable of saving the
settings I enter each time, this being on my list to resolve.
So my suggestion for getting your benq going would be to temporarily
turn on SSID broadcasting and turn off encryption, to provide a simple
environment with which to confirm wicd works, then turn things back off/on.
Cheers,
Roger
