It's the choice of packaging system that holds the rest of the software together - the heart of system stability - after which the other choices should be made, in my experience. So we should hear from a Fedora user, about Gnome + redhat/.rpm as well as the .deb platform, to complete this comparison.

Debian packaging under Gnome seems the most bullet-proof software modification and maintenance scenario, but others will make a desktop selection using different values.
