Have you looked with tcpdump (or the gui versions whose name escapes
me) to see what is happening?

Have you any other DNS servers on the network, besides the ipcop box?
Well yes, though this particular puzzle has existed for some time, much more recently there is a server 2008 domain controller though it's DNS records only have entries for windows machines that have joined it's domain, and the connection issue is the same whether the DC is running or not. The desktop from which I'm attempting to connect has the ipcop box's ip address in /etc/resolv.conf and then an OpenDNS address.
