I think you have to do a bit more than just view the dir, the .directory file stores the icon location (X,Y) and it appears it only does this if you move an icon to something other than it's initial resting spot. Or if you drag an icon into the dir, whereever you plop it down, that's what shows up in that silly file.
Even a devout GUI-ite like me views that as a bit excessive.
