I have a few issues with 2.5.5 also. However, by eliminating a few
unneeded modules I was finally able to get it to compile. I'm currently
using Workstation 3.1.1 and gcc 3.0.4 for my bleeding edge experience.

I'm not up to e2fsprog 1.26, yet. I'll grabb a copy and see what happens.
