Ah the joys of waiting. All I have to do is
emerge --clean rsync (to throw away any stale ebuilds)
emerge kde-base/kde
and portage takes care of the rest including a higher level of python,
the appropriate qt, etc.
python and qt and kdelibs are done (3 hours) - still chugging through
the rest. gentoo has updated the kdm stuff so that you can run your
choice of 2,2,2 or 3 after all is said and done.
