And the result is (after some overnight Z's) success - even sound is working without a hitch. KDE 3.0 starts up in a reasonable amount of time and restarts my sessions correctly. Now I'll need to experiment with setting up some desktop icons (memory of how to do that seems to have died several single malt sessions ago <grin>). Even though I'm primarily an xfce fan, I'll give this a try for a few weeks. On my 800Mz/256M machine, the results are not too bad. KDE 3.0 is much peppier than in the past.
