People spent more time playing games on desktops than doing serious business. Do we need DirectX and super-intelligent GUI for a business desktop? Definitely no. I frankly don't know wehther they were expecting a capable desktop for business users or game console for home users. Virutally all Win$ desktops are game consoles for home users.
I do think that the guys who are doing linux desktop development was over-ambitious. They should not aim to replace Win$ totally, but the business-related functions of W$. All these desktops should be united and focused, so that that they would not kill each other owning to duplicated and wasted efforts (as another reader had pointed out about Ireland).
