What I did before I installed those rpm's was to study them with midnight
commander. You can easily browse their contents, just like a filesystem.
While I was there, I made careful notes ot all the directories that would
be altered when they were installed. When I was done poking around, I made
simple copies of those directories, preserving the directory structure, in
a temporary directory on the harddrive. I then installed the rpms. I never
had a problem, but if for some reason I clobbered the install, I could
easily bootup via my recovery floppy or linux card cd and copy the backup
directories into place... and regain use of my box.
Be aware, you'll working on the very heart of your linux system. Once you
install the new
libraries, it would be best to shutdown and reboot.
