I read that, hoping it would not be a problem.

Won't a kernel recompile better for me?  I got the thing
running now on Command line.  Turning a few things
off from the REDHAT version should be the way to go, and
I'll make conservative choices.

At this point i'd say the kernel may be the primary suspect.
