i'd send it just to alan, and ask if he thinks a more general post to the lkml would be appropriate. this because he might right off the top of his head know the answer and because the mailing list is pretty high traffic right now, and he'd know whether this is something that's a known issue or not.
No response from him, but the status of this has changed a bit now. I've got the appropriate driver, etc. (a cvsup'ing did the trick), DRI loads, but I get segfaulting when I try anything GLX. Running xpdyinfo gives me "XFree86-DRI" so I assume I'm OK there. I shudder to think what will happen when a screensaver loads.
