libproxy.so, a/k/a mod_proxy, implements a proxy/cache for Apache. It proxies FTP, CONNECT (for SSL), HTTP/0.9, HTTP/1.0, and HTTP/1.1. It can be configured to work with other proxy modules for other protocols, too. I'm sure there are security issues and gotchas of which you need to be aware. I'd have a look at the Apache site.
