It went great!, but now I'm a bit intimidated. Should I switch to an easier distro, or do you guys think Slack will be OK for an advanced beginner. I'm not afraid to RTFM, but occasionally have trouble UTFM (understanding the friggin manual).

Slack is good. It's easy to figure out, just read the book on their site. http://slackware.com/book/ It's not totally up to date, but it should explain the basics.
