I got it fixed.

There were no other files XF86Config or the -4 variant - they are all in
/etc/X11 except for a symlink to XF86Config in /usr/X11R6 so I killed that
symlink. Still wouldn't center.

Caldera's file did not work so I recreated a brand new XF86Config-4 from
xf86config. I then setup the monitor and screen the same as Caldera's
file. Still did not center so I remembered I'd printed out XF86Config(5)
man section so I started through it and verified the file was setup ok. I
then used xvidtune to get the screen where I wanted it and created a new
modeline with the values it gave. That worked and I'm happy.

Thanks to all for the help.
