It sounds like they made a big bet and lost. It just shows how hard it is to make money with linux. The great virtue of linux is that it saves money for users, but, by the same token, it doesn't put money into the pockets of linux software firms. At least not on the desktop.
It is also a reminder of how small the linux world is. Four million dollars would save the day? Compare that to the cash flow of Microsoft.
