There are several packages that have to be updated for the new kernel to work properly, some of which are as ever-changing as the development kernel itself. The ones I remember were e2fsprogs, xfsprogs, procps, modutils, and alsa-utils. e2fsprogs and xfsprogs were cake, but procps was big fun. The devel version by Rik van Riel and Robert Love consistently rebooted my machine when I ran 'ps'. I had to get a different version by a Dr. Calahan (sp?) which seemed to work fine. Modutils was replaced by something I think they called module-utils. The basics seem to work the same, but I haven't worked out some of the details yet, especially since the modules.conf syntax has changed. I had used alsa before so that wasn't as much of an issue, but it's still a work in progress.
The box in question was stock Slackware 8.1 before I started messing with it if that makes a difference. It is scheduled to be an all-beta experience, with a devel kernel and associated utils, CVS XFree86, and the latest RC of KDE. Should be interesting, if not particularly stable.
