I suspect your drive is not supported by the kernel you are using.  The kernel 
may be too old.  That's what 'not claimed by any active driver' usually 
means, or did when I was trying to get my USB Palm Pilot  working.  The usb 
storage driver should have handled this device if it was supported, so I 
suggest a newer kernel.
