I've used the office ebuilds and as long as you pay attention and have a jre installed it's worked fine for me. KDE is a huge thing - I heard it's about between 1 and 2 thirds of the kernel size so it takes a while to compile even on a fast machine. When I did it under Caldera eDesktop on a 933 it took forever - and that was KDE 2.x which is smaller.
