This sounds like you have something in your startup directory which used to look like an application link (.desktop or .kdelink or something) but now is associted with KWrite. Did you happen to change the associations for KWrite recently (or relatively recently to when this started).
I did not AFAIK change any associations for KWrite, and I never found what was causing it to start up to four times when KDE loaded. The problem was occuring on both RH 7.3 and RH 9.0.
What I finally did that solved the problem was to delete the directory .kde under my home directory. This worked although I did have to go back and reconfigure some of my desktop.
So while I am at a loss to say what was going on, I did resolve the issue.
