Are you running artsd? If so (Ctrl-Esc brings up Process Manager in KDE) try killing it before starting Audacity. I do not claim to be an expert on aRTs, but I believe it puts hooks into the ALSA system and isn't necessary... and has caused trouble for me recording in the past.
