I got the sound problem with either kernel, 2.2.x or 2.4.x. These are the 
kernels off the Cds.

I don't require pppoe. I said I used a cable connection in my original 
post.

It is the distro's fault. There's no need to slam me, I never slammed 
you.

This was uncool. I said I got the error from Caldera 3.1 in my original 
post, not 2.4..

I was not trying to slam Linux on the whole with my post. I realize 
things can be fixed. I merely pointed out stuff that I expect to work 
right out of the box.

At any rate, I won't pursue this anymore. Thank you for your 
observations.
