sorry, i never meant to imply that leaving out the debug stuff gave the
entire increase all by it's lonesome.

my system is a k6-2 tho, and it got compiled for an i586 but, that
aside, i've rebuilt a few things that - although they did speed up -
never showed the difference that this did. leaving out the debug stuff
quite likely contributed a portion of that increase and, i'm betting, so
too will using --enable-final. 

hmmm.. come to think of it i used to specify k6 when i compiled. i found
there wasn't much difference in speed loading the k6 binary from an i386
binary but the compile time was quite a bit longer. this time i didn't
specify the arch or cpu and just let the system figure it out. lesson
learned i guess =)
