I am using caldera 2.4 with a 2.4 kernel.
I went and bought a nice lexmark photo quality image printer at BestBuy. The
salesman was great, really. He was a lexmark person, and really knew the
hardware. The box was marked for redhat and suse linux but I
though, what the hey, I've been there.
rpm'ing the driver, I got the expected dependency errors.
error: failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6 is needed by lexmarkz53-1.0-8
libXext.so.6 is needed by lexmarkz53-1.0-8
libXi.so.6 is needed by lexmarkz53-1.0-8
I have the "missing" files, so I used the --nodeps options. The post install script
failed when
trying to show me the license. Unperturbed, having done a z32 on a redhat
box and knowing the general layout, I set up the queue and filter and
all, and can print text or postscript files fine. Even the red is red, not
brown like my Epson 850.
BUT
Trying to use the fancy configuration tool (lexmarkz53) doesn't work
properly. The menu box comes up and looks fine, but trying to use it results
in funny things, like garbage to the printer, pages ejecting, whatever. The
configuration file is however updated. Trying to print a test page fails,
though.
SO
I have am assuming that the lexmark software is not finding those drivers it
said were missing. However, checking on my redhat box, those libs are in the same
path as the
libs on my caldera 2.4 box. The difference is that the files on Caldera are
links to higher numbered version of the same libraries.
My z32 printer on my Red Hat box doesn't do these strange things. I
exchanged the cables, and no change in the caldera box problems.
I suppose I should just install this on my Red Hat box and see if these
problems go away, but this must be solvable on the Caldera box.
Well, I am heading out to the store to buy a bidirectional cable, which I
suspect my printer cable is not, but in the meanwhile:
Any insight appreciated.
